  2. South Korea, China, and much of Europe were quite big recipients of foreign aid until recently. What seems to be more important is having a local government that tries to benefit beyond the ruler's tribe to develop the nation.

  3. It's probably called that because they're basically edible weeds to them. Lobsters in America were also "prison food" back in the days when they naturally washed up on New England beaches.

  4. The permanent way out is either education... or colonization. Either way it's clear that their old ways are dysfunctional, and they have to question what traditions are truly valuable versus which ones keep them vulnerable.

  5. Africa was always cursed with a lack of navigable rivers for its size, which is why it's spent practically all its life as a collection of small tribal kingdoms that nobody (local or colonial) could really consolidate.
