Which is basically to make sure the CPC does not forcibly seize Taiwan, which if we don't fight directly at least means bringing supplies and information to the Taiwanese resistance, and make the Party lose face among the Chinese people by denying the quick and easy victory they keep promising.

Japan has since interpreted its constitution to allow for strikes into other territories, not to seize it as part of a "war", but to reduce the enemy's capacity to strike Japan itself. This is essential because the standoff distances of modern missiles allow for unlimited offensive missions without those enemy pilots even leaving their own airspace.

There's also the political appointees between the IC and President who filtered the information based on 43's interests and preferences, giving a rosy picture leading quickly to "Mission Accomplished".

Taiwan never gained "independence" because Chiang Kai-Shek held fast to his dream of retaking the Mainland, and by the time it became obvious that this was impossible it was also too late with most of the decolonized world (mostly Africa and the Middle East) adhering to the PRC's One China Principle in order to gain recognition with China. Ironically the actions of a dictatorial ideologue decades ago puts Taiwan under mortal threat by a dictatorial ideologue today.

Taiwanese seem more like lovers than fighters, especially with democratization ending the KMT autocracy and "White Terror". But that doesn't mean they can't grow some balls, they might just need to be kicked there first.

Apparently Ho Chi Minh once said "Better to smell some French dung for a few years than to eat Chinese shit for the next thousand years." Yeah the anti-Chinese sentiment runs deep in SE Asia, especially in Vietnam where they've endured One-Thousand Years of Humiliation by multiple Chinese dynasties.

The chips can be eventually substituted and fab'd elsewhere. The bigger concern is allowing the PLA submarines free undetected access to the deep ocean, especially since the PRC's nuclear buildup indicates they're no longer interested in mere "minimal credible deterrence" ☢️

Notice it's the nations not directly threatened by Chinese attempt at rising regional hegemony who are more dovish, whereas China's neighbors have already decided to resist and invite more Western presence.
