Right, it's pretty much impossible to do anything without a Chinese SIM, a Chinese bank account, and a WeChat account, or a friend/agent who does everything on your behalf. It's by far the least tourist friendly country that isn't under international sanctions.

Considering the quality of their builds (especially the newer ones), those bills are going to come as a shock on their dwindling budgets.

It doesn't mean it'll collapse tomorrow, but the way things are trending it won't be looking so imposing like the CPC dreams to be when the PRC turns 100.

My 18~49 aged friends in China say the working conditions are stifling, constant inspections to find reasons to get rid of people, while no longer being granted vacations outside of expensive national holidays. They're all looking for ways to find jobs abroad and expatriate.

When I lived in Beijing, my apartment building (built only in like 2018) had signs saying "watch for falling objects", and they weren't depicting flowerpots or any other tenant-owned material either.

All that profit got squirreled away by corruption, after getting consumed by state security and propaganda programs. Sadly the lack of paycheck and human capital investment leaves the average Chinese subject poor and uncompetitive.

They're not spending on real estate or durable goods either. They're holding their money because they're anxious about their future.

Ordos only came alive because the government forced some schools to base out of there. Even then the resuscitation is incomplete, and there's not really any other practical options to compel movement to the other concrete shell communities.

China relied on the consumption of the West to fuel their growth on the cheap. Beijing wrongly believed that other people's wallets would stay open for the PRC indefinitely no matter what they did.
