They were also hoping that hydrogen fuel cells would become the solution, as sourcing it is democratized to basically anywhere with water. Compared at least to BEVs which requires enormous amounts of rare earths that they're ill-equipped to produce.

Modern farming is quite high-tech, as labor everywhere is getting unavailable and pricey. I'll be inheriting my family's farm but will need a crash course in agri-tech since I've only recently got the house hooked up and haven't yet started flooding the fields with Wi-Fi.

@wsxgfhccr Vertical and indoor farms would be an answer... if SG can guarantee the energy inputs to operate them. A single layer of sunlight is free, but practically all the sunlit parts of S'pore are already dedicated to handling fresh- and floodwater.

@mintcake2668 Maybe to just survive, but not to fight a war on which is a lot more calorie intensive. Plus their crops are practically always tainted with heavy metals and questionable chemicals which further reduces performance -- the water pollution extends even deep into their underground aquifers. When I lived there the food and bottled water (Nongfu Spring being among the worst) often had a strange metallic tinge.

Vertical farming requires constant energy input, which Japan and Taiwan are likewise vulnerable to. Though it would instantly improve yields since pests and weeds can be well controlled.

@djinn666 The ocean is huge, but deepwater ports are much more limited. Plus any anti-ship threat by anyone would basically cancel insurance coverage and discourage any ship from sailing in.
