  2. A consistently growing economy became the post-Mao basis of the CCP's legitimacy over China. This prosperity has been slowing down as China enters the middle-income trap, and they risk not getting out without the freedom to challenge, disrupt, and overhaul themselves. Being challenged is antithetical to the Communist system, so the only other option is denying access to even the thought of it.

  3. It's really only the Koreans who hate on Japan, as bringing up their invasions and "lack of remorse" is a quick and consistent way to rile up domestic political support... just like in the PRC. Other countries they've invaded have largely forgiven the past and would gladly intake Japanese people, culture, and aid.
