  1. June 12 is when the Emilio Aguinaldo declared Philippine independence from Spain, which the US granted after a long while fighting against and eventually with Filipino insurgents. The American decision to let go the Philippines was based on racism, the practicality of distance, and the open debate of colonialism in general, but it still was voluntary. The Philippine official National Day was changed from its actual independence on July 4 back to June 12 ironically as a protest against America over a post-war payment dispute of all things.
