For its size and amount of economic activity, modern China is sorely lacking in prolific brands and valuable soft power because their own compatriots keep undercutting them. Sales and marketing command more value-added than raw manufacturing, so the lack of support for this keeps China stuck in the middle income trap.

  2. The ultimate goal of capitalism collapsing into monopolies never went away either. Governments just disrupt or permit the process to various degrees over time.
