The problem with Communist governments is that the more comfortable they are, the more belligerent they get. Resistance and struggle is the only type of action they appreciate, hence why deterrence is more productive than appeasement.

@davidwong5197 Taiwan is fine, it was considerably more lively than the Mainland cities I visited just last summer.

That's the ideal, but a distant thought considering China has always been ruled by an autocracy -- with violent transitions between ruling governments. Taiwan didn't democratize until the end of the Cold War, but they finally demonstrate the "China" that China should have become.

That's just words on a page. In reality Taiwan has never been under the rule of the PRC, and the ROC has no hope of forcibly seizing back the Mainland. Functionally the two sides were always independent ever since the ROC abandoned Hainan in 1950.

"China" colloquially has become synonymous specifically to Mainland China, even among pre-Return Hong Kongers and ROC citizens. The Party-run PRC has consistently demonstrated its intolerance and incompatibility with the open questioning and challenge of government policy enjoyed outside of the Mainland, hence the continued divergence of national sentiments among the Chinese-speaking community globally. Officially these are all recognized as in "China", but more as an academic concept grander than the territory actually ruled by Běijīng. Like exactly no country outside the PRC and ROC recognizes Mongolia as a sovereign part of China.

Ukraine is demonstrating solid unity under deadly hardship, while Russians flee to Türkiye, Bali, and Dubai.

It was the ego of CKS that kept Taiwan part of "China" instead of cutting the KMT losses and getting recognized as a separate sovereign.

@igoldenage Well yeah, and California has led America's economic and social trends ever since rail and telegraph connected it to the rest of the US.

How it's enforced matters. The ROC constitution has no effect in the PRC and vice versa -- and the PRC constitution itself doesn't really hold weight either due to how unlimited and arbitrary CPC rule acts on the Mainland. If the People's Republic seeks to be the sole unchallenged representative of "China", its government should first be predictably bound by its own words.

More smaller man-portable weapons. Problem is the Taipei government wants to continue a deteriorating strategy of totally preventing all PLA presence on the island.

@CoinShow Kuomintang (國民黨), the ruling single party of the Republic of China up until Taiwan democratized at the end of the Cold War. Even though they were anticommunist, they were just as brutal and instituted just as severe of a police state as the CPC did on the Mainland until they yielded to democracy (see the "White Terror 白色恐怖").

If the 10m house has a bad foundation, I'd rather have the 1m one.
