  1. The status quo is that Taiwan is functionally independent, without declaring itself so. The "radical" part is a reaction to Xi's signaling that he is preparing to take that unwise gamble, especially since the failure of "Two Systems" in HK making it clear that the not-Mainland lifestyle they fundamentally appreciate will be a top priority for Mainlander occupiers to obliterate.
