  1. South Korea still exists, and grew to be clearly better in every way to its northern counterpart. The others were only lost because the governments that hosted US forces failed to get their act together despite over a decade of America’s shield and aid. The length of which is impressive itself due to all of them being surrounded by hostile nations that American forces didn’t go occupy.

  4. Politics is the eternal challenge to minimize disappointment, and Western institutions are the most consistent at being the least bad option. The alternatives prove to be more impotent and/or imposing.

It was a Stalinist plot to spread Communism, now that Mainland China was seized, Korea was correctly assumed to be less strategic to the Americans at the time, the Soviets had the atom bomb, and the ROK forces were completely dedicated to counterinsurgency rather than conventional warfare. But it was a green light welcomed by Kim Il-Sung who wanted a unified Korea, and Mao who needed leverage for Soviet technical assistance while paying back for all the ethnic Koreans who fought with the PLA up until then. A big reason the South nearly fell was because they had no tanks and other heavy weaponry, which the Americans had denied to Syngman Rhee as he kept openly threatening to use those in his own surprise offensive against the North to likewise reunify Korea.
