The problem is the CPC will destroy anyone who challenges their rule over China: foreigners or Chinese. As China enters the middle income trap burdened by aging, debt, and pollution, it will become impossible to gag the Party's critics with easy money. Táiwān is their last hope of silencing domestic dissent, but an invasion and occupation will inevitably give rise to an eventually-victorious insurgency... apparently one that the ROC has specifically asked the US advice about having been on the wrong side of an IED for decades. This would be devastating to the Chinese people whose only son disappeared on deployment, in a society made brittle to losses by lacking the imagery of obvious setbacks in post-Mao "New China". So while the PLA could ultimately seize Táiwān, it will most likely come at the cost of the CPC -- the unrest from the battle losses and collapse of peaceful trade would send "unified" China into a new period of Warring States as localities struggle to keep themselves alive by trying to separate their reputation from whatever is left of the central authority.
