Also have to realize that the Nationalists were just as authoritarian as the Communists even after their retreat to Taiwan (i.e. the "White Terror"), they were just so egregiously corrupt by the end of WWII that the West basically abandoned them until Communism's expansionist interests were realized leading into the Korean War. The KMT then got its fraction of China educated and industrialized decades earlier than the Mainland who distracted themselves with the GLF and CR, and unlike the CPC they eventually did yield to public pressures for democratic self-determination instead of doubling down on intrusive state control. So yeah China's rise would've been a lot more palatable had it gone more the way of what is now just Taiwan.
