One thing Jakarta's MRT (and the TransJakarta BRT) stations could use are more fare gates. It can take a couple minutes to get in or out of a station from the backup of passengers, especially since the concept of using a prepaid transit card (i.e. Jak Lingko and e-money bank cards) instead of one-time tickets is also relatively new.

The employment and skills aren't monopolized by Chinese though, which is especially damaging for the Chinese young adults left behind with shrinking job opportunities and suffering "20%" (i.e. even higher) unemployment rates.

Singapore's main interest is being neutral enough to maintain diplomacy and trade with as wide a base as possible. Its military and information sharing setup though aligns with the West far more strongly than other "non-aligned" neighbors like India and Indonesia.

@zeissiez SIP likely benefitted from Chinese state support, guanxi, and looser accounting practices that was unavailable under Singaporean ownership.

SG's roots are Malay and British, the population is just dominated by southern Chinese who were more interested in commerce and adopted Britain's governance setup. S'pore would not be as trusted or viable had it used China's more prescriptive and overbearing political structure.

Ironically went from China-Harmony/Circulate (money) to China-Melt Away (華融 can mean both)

Singapore is what the PRC wants itself to be, ignoring how S'pore: > is ruled by a PAP who accept losses in open polling; > is actively multicultural and not trying to Sinicize its minorities; > does not praise cheating or tolerate the perception of corruption among its officials; > offers reliable interpretations and enforcement of its laws and policies; > critically relies on peaceful open trade and travel; and > maintains a purely defensive military for its fully resolved sovereign limits So while Singapore isn't a politically drama-filled society as seen in Europe and the Americas, it still is much closer to a Western liberal democracy than the prescriptive stratified autocracy that has always ruled over China.

Fast does not mean durable though, especially with how much of China's growth is all from debt to fund increasingly unproductive builds 🐢🐇 America's share will drop as it relocalizes production, but SG's continued prosperity is more likely to come from India and ASEAN 🇮🇳🍚

Not necessarily, all the delays and questionable quality have irritated the Indonesians; rumor is they're approaching Japan again to complete the rest of the line to Surabaya. Plus there's growing protest about Chinese mining operations, and questions about those crew cut-hairstyled Chinese "tourists" crawling all over Riau. That's on top of their classic suspicions about anyone identified as atheist, Communist, and/or Chinese.

India and ASEAN 🇮🇳🍚 If S'pore can get its neighbors to adopt its competence in government at least for commerce, the region will quickly become the new center of global manufacturing and trade of tangible goods with specialized services not far behind.

Services perhaps? Philippine call centers are famous in the English-speaking world. Plus there's so many remittances and reinvestments from Pinoys abroad, who number far more by both headcount and wealth in America than in China.

Innovation they don't really utilize out of fear of violating the Party's deliberately vague policies.

LKY did specifically want the five stars from the PRC flag to reflect the Chinese majority, which got combined with the crescent moon and Indonesian colors for its Malay people and origin.

Guns. In both places not everyone is packing, but it's also not terribly difficult to find someone who owns a few pieces and proudly knows how to use them too.

Right, China's rise wouldn't be nearly as alarming had it gone more the way of the Republic now on Taiwan. Instead Beijing opts to "Make China Great Again" through the same old imperial arrangements with yet another unchallengeable autocratic dynasty at its core.
