  1. ​That's because we keep trying to treat rail travel like a for-profit business instead of the public utility like it really is. No land-based transport is profitable on path usage fees alone, it has to take either government support or considerable ancillary real estate ownership (as is the case in Hong Kong, or previously the US where rail companies were granted rights of way at times 100 miles wide).
