The enemy we were fighting was a lot more identifiable back then. Even so, things like COINTELPRO, the War on Drugs, and Vietnam showed there was a lot of fighting over "enemies" where the treatment was more damaging than the disease. It's not so much "surrender" as caution and conversation over what battles are truly worth fighting.

Raids from friendly territory are a lot easier to "win" than sustaining combat in hostile lands, which the South Koreans at least did in Vietnam.

American ammo manufacturers are running all day and night to provide for Ukraine, but it's only a fraction of what we were once able to do due to the historically smaller need and rising standards for weaponry. Plus there's also all the air and sea equipment necessary to defend the status quo in the Western Pacific, which has a much longer lead time to get into production.

@takeda64 And look what happened to Germany in the end. When free societies rally they can end a threat permanently (and not say permit them to survive and slowly salami slice gains over generations), but it usually requires something dramatic to create and sustain that motivation.

Only at like the squad level, which any group of randos with guns could pull off. In terms of sustained combat, the last experience they had was their sprint north when the Incheon landings threatened to sever their supply lines had the Americans surrounded and besieged Seoul instead of slowly fighting through it.
