  3. Nuclear incidents are the worst kind when they happen for any reason though. There's no defense against fallout other than burying yourself and your supplies and waiting for the decay.

  4.  @sumkindacheeto  Although the US still has a huge network of freight-capable rail, lines over 100 years old and still going strong hauling bulk and HAZMAT that isn't economical to truck. A lot of abandoned rights of way are still intact and could be refurbished fairly quickly. In contrast to modern HSR viaducts (especially in Japan and China) which can't handle the weight of a fully laden freight train.
