  1. Indonesia and Singapore will try to stay neutral and extract benefits from both China and America as much as they can. But if they can no longer avoid the choice, I'd wager they'd go West; tolerance and democracy are just too much a part of the civic culture to side with a supremacist and controlling CPC.

  2. Looks like China will have to cater harder with Indonesia to discourage them from setting up something similar across its vast and defensible archipelago too. Which will be a tough sell considering Indonesia's deep suspicions of Communists and Chinese, as well as consistently closer ties with Japan.

  3. That's a significantly longer route, most ships are trying to go East-West and not south to Australia. This desire is the whole reason Singapore exists. Plus the Sunda Strait is even worse for ships than Malacca -- going through Indonesia you'd likely have to go around the far end of Bali.
