Hence why young adults nowadays YOLO vacations and experiences when they "should" be saving and investing that money... only so much health can be salvaged from it later on, and the time only gets lost to make some interesting stories.

Ever-delayed independence and milestone achievements by preceding Gen X and Millennials doesn't indicate hope that Gen Z will end up any better off though. Path dependence has only been getting more dominant upon life trajectories, with earlier missteps only getting harder to recover from.

You may not need a car, but it helps to get a driver's license anyway. Much like martial arts and first aid, it never hurts to collect skills even if you never hope to use it.

Driving is a skill, and it never hurts to collect skills. You don't need to own a car to be licensed for one. But you'll likely need it to get around in developing locales where upward economic potentially really exists -- most prominently in places where two wheels is often preferable to four -- and where public transit usually isn't.

An economy shaped by those same old people to boot. If anything Boomers have only grown in political power now that in retirement they do have all day to get indoctrinated and vote for their own favors, often at the expense of supports for the youth.

Boomers in particular, especially now that they're practically all retired and literally have all day to get indoctrinated and lobby and vote for their interests accordingly. There's a reason that education and young family welfare always gets gutted to salvage the budget for senior benefits and ownership tax breaks.

@kd_1421 And you were lucky, as the costs of living and recovering from missteps aren't as steep as they are for young adults these days. Today's prices and internet permanence means what was once a childish mistake can become a lifelong setback.
