I’ve driven that road many times, to Asheville and further. It’s a truck route, too.
15
@patersonplankrd Yes, but at least one lane was open, and drivers in East Tennessee and NC knew alternate routes. This is a major highway and needs to remain open.

@diablo666541 Trump is as elite as they come. I’m not living in the affected areas, not a victim of the flooding, but I know the area very well. I know that this type of disaster hasn’t happened since the 1800s, that no person caused it, and that refusing help from the government you pay taxes to is just hurting yourself.
5
They’ve fixed it before.
4
You’re making assumptions that all people in the mountains are distrustful of government. That’s absolutely not true. In fact, western NC has/had many vacation homes. The area is more liberal than not.
4
I live in Tennessee. That’s not true.
3
@MSGill645 They have to. It’s a major East/west interstate.
3
Most don’t. Most are ordinary people who live in a beautiful part of the country and drove to work in Asheville, Waynesville, and other cities. There are also a lot of second homes and vacation houses. There are some really remote areas where residents may not welcome visitors or trust the government, but they’re just making it hard to help them recover from this horrendous disaster.
2
@barkmaker Kinda hard to help people like that.
2
Reroute where?
2
@Oldschoolrules123 There are two tunnels between the Tennessee border and Maggie Valley, NC. I-40 is prone to rock slides. The alternate routes through the mountains are just state roads, and now, it appears that they’re probably severely disrupted. One of them is a narrow road up over the mountain from Hot Springs. Interesting in the daytime, and nothing you’d want to be on at night.
1
@seeharvester It’s a gigantic rock.
1
It was one lane for decades.
1
@patersonplankrd “Fully open?” It’s a major highway. Fixing I-40E is going to be top priority. Sounds like state road 70 is heavily damaged too. Also, highway 26, south from Asheville, is flooded, and presumably damaged. From Elizabethton to Asheville on I-26 isn’t a reasonable alternative, but may be the only one.

FEMA is there, Trumper. Sheesh. Cool down. Would you rather Biden showed up to minimize it and throw paper towels at the flood victims?
1
They think that FEMA is going to take their property. Trump supporters—of course—are telling them stuff like that. FEMA agents are no longer safe going to people who have lost their homes, offering them the $750 emergency funds and taking applications for more substantial help. Now, they’re operating out of an office in the interests of safety.
1
@kimlarso FEMA was in NC immediately, but because the roads were washed out, they were using helicopters to reach the victims. It’s lying B.S. to claim that FEMA isn’t on the ground there, or that they “hadn’t shown up.”
1
@patriotalways68FJBNot happening. That’s more MAGA lies. By the way, the governors of the affected states are given millions of dollars to help them rebuild roads and bridges, which is the states’ responsibility.
1
@jamescook7713 Not FEMA.
1
@ZackNehring Biden hasn’t effed up. FEMA is doing its job. Biden released many millions of FEMA funds that Congress has authorized. It goes to the governors, but people who were hurt by this disaster are getting emergency funds and being helped to apply for more. You can blame Trump for lying about it. By the way, Trump refused to give California FEMA funds when they suffered the wildfires. He’s projecting, claiming Biden is like him.
1
Food for thought? Stirring up mistrust, I’d call it. FEMA has nothing to do with which party is in control of the presidency. It is a federal program that is funded by Congress. Easy to fact check, though, that Republicans all voted not to increase FEMA’s budget. Trump withheld funds, but Biden 😅hasn’t , and wouldn’t.
1
The major newspapers are saying that armed militias have arrived. That’s not a good thing.
1
@Viper81766 Yes, and it’s helping taxpayers, the victims living in western NC and East Tennessee.
1
It’s mountain on both sides, and they are rock.
1
@jefferysmith5921 I honestly don’t see how. Not an expert, of course, The mountains are still rock. Not to mention, the route I-40 takes is the straightforward one, despite being steep with lots of curves, and I-40 is a major road that stretches all the way from the west to the east coast.
