In the 40s and 50s too, of course. At 5, I spent the entire day at a huge park about a mile—at least—away. Mom helped me cross a busy street, and then I walked down a quiet, shaded street to the park, which is Pioneer Park in Billings, Montana, and spent the whole day. There were “playground ladies” in the area where the swings were very high, all of the equipment heavy wood, the ground hard. On the grassy area nearby, in the summer big girls (high school?) taught us to somersault, cartwheel, etc. way across the park, where hills ended at a creek, we would roll down the hill. 😮 I guess mama probably came to pick me up—don’t remember. She also sent me to a bakery about six blocks away to buy Bismarcks. Again, she helped cross the busy street. I’ve always been confident, and was the only one of five friends who “was allowed” to leave home at 20, (plenty old enough) moving alone to a big city two states away.
