Oh, so sad, so broken. Terrible lives, even though he, at least, understands that it’s because of the drugs. They won’t be able to keep their baby if she’s on drugs when it’s born. Most likely, too, they’ll never get the child back, if they’re still using. So, another child, or more than one, in foster care, like they were. So horribly sad.

Sam, maybe not without healthcare and dentistry. People make fun of Appalachians for their missing teeth, but it’s an expense that is completely unaffordable. I knew an old (my age, but without my privilege) woman who had no health insurance until Medicare. She had tuberculosis as a young woman, which is fairly common. My dad’s family was from KY and Southern Ohio. I’ve lived in Appalachia for nearly 30 years, and it is, by far, my favorite region, out of four Ive lived in: the West (second most favorite), West Coast, and Midwest, because of hillbilly culture, folklore and music.

Now, trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy is used, more and more, to help abused kids like Jerry to, hopefully, avoid the worst effects of abuse: drugs, prison, failed relationships, suicide. It works for adults, too, but TF-CBT trained therapists are in short supply, and the only people I know who have received it are abused children who are in State custody. I feel so sad for Jerry.
