  1. My dad worked for Northwest Airlines. One day a styrofoam container full of bags of tropical fish broke during shipment. He was able to bring them home, which led to many years of breeding and raising fish. In 1959, Dad taught a friend’s boyfriend, whom she later married, to care for fish, gave him supplies, and gave that boy a lifelong hobby and side gig. (Unfortunately, Covid-19 claimed him a few weeks ago.)

  3.  @rockon8174  People leave dogs in apartments all the time, (and abandon them in all sorts of places), especially if they are skipping out on the rent.

  4. I had to quit the rescue group I had joined. We moved here with one dog. After a couple of months, I got a female dog through a local rescue. Then I fostered, and kept, a shepherd mix, then had to take my mom’s dog, then saw a Cavalier King Charles puppy at an adoption event; took him. Meanwhile, one cat grew to 3, plus several fosters. I was called “ the dog lady” on my road, and got calls all the time about strays, because in the South, people just dump dogs and puppies out in the country. Every dog and cat lived out their lives with us. Now, we have one dog and two cats, all rescues and none part of that original bunch. I don’t know how I did it! Definitely easier as a younger person. My only regret was having to pass a big (95#), beautiful, smart Golden Retriever puppy to a breed rescue group because I had too many dogs.

  6. This is wonderful. I haven’t heard about cats having asthma, but we had one who became diabetic and needed insulin shots twice a day. I think that is fairly common, since one of my son’s cats also developed diabetes.

  7. I’ve lived on this road for nearly 30 years, and only saw gray foxes, which are littler . Still curious, though. A couple of years ago, red foxes made a den in the yard of a vacation house, and raised 3 kits. I still occasionally see one in broad daylight, which is really a treat. Once, one ambled past our shed, not knowing our dog, nearly the same size, was out. It was funny to see how surprised they both were. We also saw one on the sidewalk on Independence Blvd in DC, one night after attending the IMAX at the Air & Space museum.

  9. I recently saw cockatoos in the wild in Australia. I would love to have one; it’s always fun to me to see birds respond to humans, and in such cute , intelligent ways.

  12. I’ve never, in my long, cat loving life, ever restricted one to a small space. I got my current cat, who is 18, when she was six weeks old. She ate kibble and somehow knew what a litter box was. More important, she joined a household of 5 dogs and 3 adult cats and took over.

  18. I’d never known before that people will just put an unwanted pet rabbit outside, despite the fact that they abandon dogs and cats every day. But when I was visiting my home town in 2019, I saw two different domestic rabbits abandoned outside, in different neighborhoods. One was chocolate brown and the other, orange. I hope someone took them in. Rabbits are easy to care for.

  19. My brother did, pre-Internet, lose a cockatiel after he went outside with it on his shoulder. Amazingly, he found it, a couple of miles away, only because it saw him and flew to him.

  21. I live on a large lake. The wildlife resource officers used to help rescue birds and animals, but now “leave it to nature,” which, of course, is what happens when no humans are around.

  23. My nearly-17-yr old cat still looks younger, but she doesn’t jump as far, or climb the ladder to the loft. In fact, I had to stuff her in a pillowcase to carry her down after the last time she did that. She’s like me; I look a little younger, but no longer climb ladders (except to help another senior--her--or jump).

  24. We rescued two kittens with eye infections from my son’s yard. It was too late for one kitten’s left eye, so he is now one eyed, but they’re house cats now.

  25. Now, 2020 with the permafrost melting, a 50,000 year old wolf pup has been found, nearly perfectly preserved. What happened to it? The den, built in sand, had collapsed on just that one pup.
