People are individuals and different. You can only talk about your own experience really, and it seems like you don't understand depression. It's more than unhappiness. It's sometimes something overwhelming that people can't find a way out of on their own. It's not just about exerting willpower.

To be fair to doctors, mental health services are severely underfunded and there is more and more demand for them. People are individuals and need more attention than doctors can give in 10 minute appointments. A good relationship with a doctor should always involve an exchange of information and sometimes assertiveness if need be, but without being aggressive. It's hard for a depressed person to be assertive on their own behalf I guess, and it requires some understanding of their own condition. I don't believe there is a 'cure' for depression. Symptoms can be alleviated with medication but in the end only the person themselves can get themselves out of it - sometimes with the help of friends or family. Some people never escape it, and poverty I think can be one cause, because of all the pressures and fractured relationships that can come with that.

@htb123 I'm not blaming those who have been harmed. I don't think it's a simple as you are making out.

@htb123 What should doctors do, in your opinion, when approached by someone with depression?

@htb123 That may work for some people but not for all, I think, but I do think pills should be a last resort or a temporary one, especially when they are addictive.
