£600 million to evict 300 people whom Rwanda has no obligation to detain in Rwanda and under a deal whereby Rwanda can send an unlimited number of Rwandans to the UK - that's not a good deal for British taxpayers. Labour has already come up with a better idea. Why the Tories keep flogging this dead horse is a mystery. The Lords are trying to save us from this crap but they cannot block legislation ultimately if the Commons are determined to push it through.

@stevec6427 You're right that was a typo of mine which I will correct.

@robertmalyn6493 They can't ultimately block it. They can only try to make the Commons rethink on things such as things that won't work, are not good value, or don't make sense but the Commons can reject the Lords' opinions.

I think the idea is that they won't have a choice but the Rwanda deal is bad value for British taxpayers for many reasons.

@BroncoBill321 It's called a general election which the Tories don't want to hold quickly.

@robertmalyn6493 It's part of the system of checks and balances to try and get the Commons to reconsider bad ideas or just improve them. They can't ultimately block it though. Without the Lords any loony badly thought out idea could become law without further considered scrutiny.

@robertmalyn6493 If it ain't broke don't fix it. I do think a consideration by another body with lots of experience is a good thing and has proved to be over the centuries. Whether the Commons takes notice or not is a different matter. Imagine if the Post Office had been subject to an independent assessor who looked at what they were doing and how they were behaving. That would not have been a bad thing and might have saved them a lot of trouble in the longer run as well as protecting the lives of innocent sub-postmasters. Sadly those who were in the position to scrutinize the PO were not really independent. The assessors brought in by the P.O were funded by them and when they started unearthing the truth, they were dispensed with.

Why? They are trying to save British taxpayers from the worst value deal since Boris spaffed so much Covid money uselessly up the wall. The Lords can only push it back to the Commons to reconsider their objections but they can't ultimately block it if the Commons is determined to go ahead with it.

@NS-pt9rr O wave the magic wand and do it immediately. That's not how things work in the real world, but this particular method is the worst value imaginable. A £600m deal to evict 300 people (£2m per person) and Rwanda has not obligation to detain them in Rwanda. In return Rwanda can send as many of it's people to the UK as it wants - no limit.
