What does patriotism mean? My country right or wrong? 'The last refuge of the scoundrel'? I think people are educated enough to judge things on their merits not with the presumption that my country is the best in the world at everything at all times. That's progress. However there is plenty to be proud of that Britain has fought for or created or invented to the benefit of its people and mankind. Parliamentary democracy, the Vote, workers rights, musical greatness, the NHS, its theatre and poets, fighting against Hitler, etc etc etc. I think the English are embarrassed to celebrate St George's Day since English history is a mixed one so what exactly is being celebrated? England was a nation that conquered and oppressed its neighbours, the Welsh, the Scots and the Irish as well as many other countries in the world and the flag has been commandeered by the far right to support their version of Englishness which is often racist.
