  1.  Arran Robeson  I do get it. I thought I explained already. I'll be more concise or more blunt so that you can understand. Tory governments don't give much of a damn about problems that affect other parts of the world but they do give a damn about things that affect people who might vote for them, and many Tory voters are of an age where Covid might kill them. The same is true more or less about other Western governments, except for Trump's as he only cares about himself.

  5. Showing your lack of knowledge there. The Gulf War was while the Tories were in power. The Iraq war was under Blair but apart from that terrible decision there were some good policies under him. Peace in N Ireland under The Good Friday Agreement 1998, devolved governments for for Scotland and Wales, high investment in education and health with the highest ever satisfaction survey results for the NHS. You quote only one Labour government, the Blair one, but the post war Labour government created the NHS and built lots of housing.

  8. I had the vaccine and lived. They say that the Astra Zeneca vaccine, which is the main one the UK is using, 100% prevents hospitalisation with Covid, but I'm not sure if that's only after the second dose.

  13. The Tories don't even need to do it in trade talks. They can have a secret deal on the side. They are hardly going to state their aims openly in government records. People don't always understand what privatisation consists of. They assume a wholesale sell off of the NHS. What is happening already is a gradual sell off of health services. 26% of the health budget already goes to private firms. A lot of this is concealed by the fact that the money is first passed through the middlemen of voluntary organisations and local authorities who pass it straight on to private companies. Because the former are involved the government counts it as funding public services. More of this is likely to happen if we hard Brexit and want a deal with the USA. Also US drug firms will want to charge the NHS more for drugs. The document is coded and exploratory. A key thing is it's not putting cards on the table and saying no to more sell off of health services and no to increasing the access of American health companies and drug companies.

  17. It's because our laws and their laws and our trade practices and their trade practices have been intertwined for 40 years. That's a lot to disentangle in a short space of time. It's the practical issues that are difficult too. It's not just a matter of saying goodbye, because there are shared resources and trade consequences. Also new barriers apply which means we have to spend on setting up new customs and immigration control arrangements and there is more bureaucracy and paperwork for exporting businesses. Not only that but we lose economies of scale and we lose all the international trade agreements that we were part of as a member of the EU, and all the subsidies from the EU. When you add that lot up it results in more spending not less than on EU membership.

  29. The Tories have brought private sector management into the NHS, often without experience of health management, because they assume the private sector management will ensure efficiency. They are mostly on contracts where they can be sacked for not meeting financial/cost targets. If you started again, the Tories would ensure the same kind of managers ended up in the NHS. What's needed is a change of government.

  30.  @banana9106  Management are there to manage the money and ensure no waste. Many of them have been brought in from the private sector. Health of patients is a secondary issue. Many NHS Trusts are in debt due to years of underfunding.

  31.  @rGxDale  Healthcare should be entirely separate from business. The ethics are entirely different. Managers in the NHS are sacked for not being able to do the impossible. There is too little money in the system and it's impossible to get out of debt without compromising healthcare. This has been going on for some years with changes of management. If it was possible management would have done it by now.

  32.  @rGxDale  Managers used to learn in house on training schemes, not be parachuted in from outside with no knowledge. Skills needed are finance skills, management skills (including people skills) and knowledge of the health sector they are working in). Savings are already being made in the digital area but there are risks attached, and the savings are not enough to compensate for an ageing and sickening population. It's been proven by research that poverty worsens people's health. Also there's a drain on the NHS from the inadequately funded social care sector. In the past the government made large cuts to the social care budget. Frankly the government told people what they were going to do and people were stupid enough to vote for them.

  43.  @ott1186  The BBC's charter requires them to be impartial and they have a Tory Chairman and a Tory Managing Director as well as a Tory Minister in charge of the Department responsible for them. Just because you see some views you disagree with doesn't mean it's not impartial. It just means there are a range of views unlike in Putin's Russia. To prove bias you'd have to monitor programmes over a period of time (e.g. news programmes) and count the views from left and right perspectives (or any others) and write to the Chairman to demonstrate that it's biased. Frankly this requirement for impartiality could mean that for every evidence backed statement, they would need to have someone to put opposing views, even if there was no evidence to back them. What particular 'bias' in this report, are you objecting to?

Now the medics know more about how best to treat hospital cases and new cases may be seen more in younger people, but though that may mean more people survive it doesn't necessarily mean fewer people ending up in hospital so they are also keeping an eye on the number of hospitalisations and intensive care cases. Survival doesn't also mean back to good health either. There can be longer term after effects. Also older and vulnerable people have been taking precautions more but if it gets out of control even older people won't be able to protect themselves. There is also about a 2 week or more time lag between new rising cases and rising deaths from new cases.

  46. Because he had an agenda to do some useful things for ordinary Londoners and he has done some already. Certain transport fares are now cheaper or pegged. He's increased the London Living Wage and supported homeless charities. He's consulted on tackling air pollution and has plans to tackle the housing deficiency. He had a track record in local government before standing for Mayor.

  48. I do know people who voted for him. Many people come to London to work and they are skilled and educated for the most part, not always, but they voted for him based on his programme and his record. It may surprise you that people pay attention to such things rather than voting for the handsomest or glibbest character or the one that shares the same bigotry and fears as happens in other places. I think London is youthful place and an optimistic place. There are areas where certain ethnic groups congregate and seem to predominate, but I don't believe there are any "no go " areas. The biggest problem in London is the level of poverty and the disparity between the poor and the rich. Khan does seem to want to do things to improve the situation, as he raised the "London living wage", put a cap on some transport fares, and made double bus journeys cheaper, as well as supporting homeless charities and having a plan to create more affordable housing and improve air pollution.
