I read recently that Ofgem are not going to protect the credit people have with energy companies as a result of too high direct debits, so if energy companies go bust people's credit will be lost/absorbed against the debts of energy companies, and that will include any money in those credit balances that came from the government - quite an incentive to go bust

@KernowDamo In the current issue of Private Eye Magazine (no 1588 ending 5 Jan 2023). It has a regular section called 'Keeping the Lights On'. Ofgem is quoted as just having announced they are 'not proceeding with our earlier proposals to ringfence customers credit balances'. The Magazine comments 'Without ringfencing, if the supplier goes down it it can take customers' advance payments with it, as has happened'.
