  1. To push them further into debt and bankruptcy or having to cut more social services? The government has cut the central grant to local councils by up to 80% since 2010. They are hugely underfunded. More financial penalties won't fix things unless everyone is willing to pay a lot more council tax to compensate..

  5.  @michaelhayes1068  I've noticed a dropping off in services in areas that have been privatised or outsourced, but I don't have much to complain about as far as individuals go. Most people try to do their best it seems to me. I think things will get worse if laws are changed to remove customer protections following Brexit. It's shocking to me that governments still haven't made it illegal for companies to raid the pension funds of their own employees (from Robert Maxwell, to Philip Green and now P&O) or to stop money laundering and tax evasion by criminal enterprises, or to do more to prevent online fraud.
