  1. The other way they reduced fire safety regulations was to avoid updating them. There was a fire in South London about 6 or 7 years ago in which 6 people died. The spread of the fire was blamed on the external cladding and the coroner recommended to government politicians that the fire regulations should be updated to deal with this, but the government dragged its heels and never did it. They were even pressed, many times, to do it by a Parliamentary Committee on Fire Safety, and still they did not do it and have no schedule for doing it today. External cladding has been used in recent times to "refresh" the look of old buildings to make them look nicer. In Kensington where Grenfell Tower is, the rich and poor live near each other and the council wanted to make the view of the Tower better for the richer residents who could see it from their residences.
