  2. How is Orwell sadistic? No one who read about reaction to his his witnessing of a hanging in 'Burmese Days' or his 'Road to Wigan Pier would say he was a sadist. This sounds like an opinion based on ignorance. I don't think Orwell ever ceased to be a socialist. That's to misunderstand his writing. 1984 and Animal Farm are critiques is about Soviet Russia, and the failures of communism as known about then. Why shouldn't the left be self critical? It's healthy in politics to be self-critical. When Orwell was writing, most women didn't have a higher education and stayed at home rather than working away from home. Their opportunities to develop any sophisticated understanding of politics were limited at the time. Orwell's thinking about women is probably in line with many men at the time and certainly not in line with the worst. Today many men who go to single sex public schools still think women are not that important except in relation to their usefulness to men, and they have less excuse for those attitudes in 2023. To cancel writers from the past because of perceived failings based on modern assessments is often to 'throw the baby out with the bath water'.

  5. It's a critique of communism not socialism. Orwell himself was always a socialist.

  6. Go back in history and almost no one was 'woke' then. Why not cancel the whole of history and everyone writing in it. That would be very Orwellian.
