Tariffs can be useful when used specifically and selectively such as to protect US steel manufacturers from competition from countries (such as China) that would unfairly dump subsidised steel onto the market to undercut and kill off the industries of their competitors, but to use tariffs in the sweeping way Trump does cuts down affordable imports without having internal replacement industries. Internal industry growth may happen to some extent in years to come but meanwhile the US economy is collapsing, some manufacturers are closing down and inflation will rise. The other risk is that reciprocal tariffs may be placed by those countries on the receiving end.

  24. The federal judges are stopping or pausing some of it but it takes a while for legal processes to happen. Trashing things, ignoring the law and all rules is much faster. I believe some one is moving for impeachment but Congress is dominated by Republicans. It would take some of them to abandon Trump but though they may not agree with him, they may fear him.

What worries me is that these may be plans under other Presidents but Trump is good at taking credit and making himself look good to voters who believe what he says. He is good at self promotion. A lot of his voters don't look further than the headlines.

There will be social unrest if this continues and which side will the army come out on if called upon to suppress it, I wonder. Trump has insulted and threatened just about every government service including the FBI, the CIA and the military.
