I am British by birth but I have stayed. I can't abandon the place because I love family, friends, London, Britain and the UK, the culture, nature, the temperate climate, the kindness and humour of the people.. Can't detach from those roots without missing them forever.

@LexxLarsD The only advantage Spain has is the weather, and perhaps the food.

From the Thatcher era when so many council houses were sold off and afterwards when not enough new houses were built of any type. Thatcher and later governments did not allow council house building and developers 'land banked' to push up prices of houses in the private sector. Also funding to local councils was massively cut so their spending on home maintenance dropped.

You have a habit of stroking your chin.

I once visited a rubber factory as a child. The sight of many colours of balloons on their moulds and the smell of rubber was heavenly. I was bought a couple of rubber squeaky toys. I still like the smell of rubber to this day. I didn't know such places still existed. My employer moved at least half of its staff to Leeds from London in the early 90s. I'm so glad I didn't go but I think many places that were thriving then are struggling now. I knew the economy would shrink once we left the EU, but when I said that many people refused to believe it. It was labelled 'project fear'. Many of these empty buildings are beautiful but how long before they deteriorate?

People nationally sometimes resent strikers in London whom they think earn more than in the rest of the country, but when you compare earnings to the price of buying or renting in London, the wages are not high in real terms.

The energy companies making a fortune are the wholesale companies, not the retail companies.

Mold can be very dangerous. A friend of mine lived in a room which was basically a lean to, temporarily in between moves. It was putrid with mold and the mold even got onto her clothes in a chest of drawers. She contracted a rare lung disease which was not curable and which eventually killed her. When my daughter was looking for student accommodation with a friend, we looked at one house where everything, doors and furniture were covered in mold. It was clear it had been unoccupied for a long time. When I said to the agent,' how could anyone offer a house for rent in this condition?' He said' What's the problem, you can just wipe it off?'. We also looked at a place which had bare wires hanging from ceilings and most of the walls but it was cheap and otherwise o.k. Then the agent rang us and said (rather late in the day) that the landlord didn't want to rent to students. These experiences relate to Liverpool. I can imagine it would be no better in London.

Wealthy people need somewhere to invest their money and housing is seen as safe because they can always increase rents. More and more housing will be owned by large companies, many of them foreign and the UK population will have less and less control over their living conditions. We will be a population available for exploitation both at work and at home.

More working from home means less trade for London but that was inevitable after Covid lockdowns demonstrated that could work and people realised how much money they would save by not commuting every day.

There are plenty of nice places. They're just not affordable for the majority.

Is there some error? Try another company. I don't think British Gas is the cheapest. To be fair the retail companies don't make that much money and that's why so many are going bust. It's the wholesale companies they are buying energy from that are making a killing. That's why a windfall tax should be levied on them more often and used to lower consumer bills.
