From the Thatcher era when so many council houses were sold off and afterwards when not enough new houses were built of any type. Thatcher and later governments did not allow council house building and developers 'land banked' to push up prices of houses in the private sector. Also funding to local councils was massively cut so their spending on home maintenance dropped.

You have a habit of stroking your chin.

People nationally sometimes resent strikers in London whom they think earn more than in the rest of the country, but when you compare earnings to the price of buying or renting in London, the wages are not high in real terms.

Mold can be very dangerous. A friend of mine lived in a room which was basically a lean to, temporarily in between moves. It was putrid with mold and the mold even got onto her clothes in a chest of drawers. She contracted a rare lung disease which was not curable and which eventually killed her. When my daughter was looking for student accommodation with a friend, we looked at one house where everything, doors and furniture were covered in mold. It was clear it had been unoccupied for a long time. When I said to the agent,' how could anyone offer a house for rent in this condition?' He said' What's the problem, you can just wipe it off?'. We also looked at a place which had bare wires hanging from ceilings and most of the walls but it was cheap and otherwise o.k. Then the agent rang us and said (rather late in the day) that the landlord didn't want to rent to students. These experiences relate to Liverpool. I can imagine it would be no better in London.

Wealthy people need somewhere to invest their money and housing is seen as safe because they can always increase rents. More and more housing will be owned by large companies, many of them foreign and the UK population will have less and less control over their living conditions. We will be a population available for exploitation both at work and at home.

There are plenty of nice places. They're just not affordable for the majority.
