Exactly that I think but it is passing as the young generation generally just say 'I'm good' now.

My generation would say ' I'm fine' when asked 'how are you?' in the UK. I think 'not too bad' was more an older generation thing. The latest expression now is 'I'm good' which is not even grammatical as strictly speaking it should be 'I'm well'.

That's the non humorous way of seeing it, by someone who's not a comedian.

Happiness is unexciting. A Chinese curse is 'May you live in interesting times'. I think 'not too bad' is an older generation thing from people who were taught not to grumble during the hard years of WW2. My generation would say 'I'm fine' and the younger generation now say 'I'm good' which is not quite grammatically correct.
