The word literally is redundant in that case. I think some people use literally because they think people won't believe them or think they are talking figuratively, unless they make it clear by saying literally so it does have a valid purpose.

I think people make an error about the meaning of literally because they associate it with literature i.e. fiction, when in fact it's referring to fact.
