It's not a laughter track. It's filmed in front of a live studio audience.

It's not canned laughter though. It's filmed in front of a live studio audience.

Much of the humour is ironical if you know any of Shakespeare's work or studied it at school or know anything about the history. It's not meant to be belly laugh slapstick, and maybe some of it does not connect with people who know little about Shakespeare or don't enjoy his work.

C James S. There is no recorded clapping in BBC comedies and in this one. It's done in front of a live audience.

C James S Not at all. It's BBC policy and there's a guy in the comments of one of these videos, who had been in the audience for a recording of the show, and describes how it works. Many of the jokes play on stuff that Shakespeare does in his plays or what's known about him so if you like Shakespeare and know a bit about his plays and his life you'll get more of the jokes. It also plays a bit on parallels with current issues in Britain at the moment. If you are looking for a different type of humour, you probably won't like this. I'm guessing that the people who go to see it are probably fans in the first place and they probably know that an audience for a comedy is expected to laugh. Laughter is infectious. Once some people start, others will follow. Maybe you'd like this clip better https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2jMs2Dp2eo

Shot to look like Blackadder? What, in the sense that it's set in historical times? It would be a bit later than the setting for Blackadder II, as Queen Elizabeth is young in that, and would be old at this time.

It's very clever and quite accurate in many references to Shakespeare. If you know and like Shakespeare's stuff it helps, but it wears its learning lightly.

Not if you like Shakespeare
