It may call itself a meritocracy but wealthier families who send their kids to top private schools and Oxford Uni are doing so in order that they can network with the wealthy and powerful and so step into top jobs. You can see many examples of this in the last Conservative government and in governments historically. Lots of old Etonians in power even when incompetent and ignorant.
