  2. There were softer Brexit options that the Tories ignored, such as remaining in the customs union or the single market. Those would have taken out the bureaucracy. However full membership is the best option but probably not deliverable now in this generation.

  3.  @capuchinseven  That's not true. EU countries each chose how to handle the banking crisis and aftermath. Portugal for instance, never had an austerity policy.

  4. Brexiteers were told to ignore experts before the Referendum and generally did. Even if the UK voted to rejoin the single market now, the EU might not accept us. It only takes one dissenting EU member to block a rejoin application. Starmer probably wants to avoid promising something he knows can't be delivered within maybe a decade and more now.
