If you saw the whole interview, what JRM said was just 'windbaggery'. He's good at that and diverting the conversation from the issue at hand because he came up with no justification for not levying a windfall tax on energy companies when even the CEs of those companies are embarrassed by their sudden wealth, calling their own companies, 'cash making machines' as Neil pointed out. France was also a country that levied a windfall tax and held their energy price rises to 4% only.

Neil never suggested we should model our economy on the Italian economy. That was JRM's diversion from the issue of a windfall tax on energy companies, which France also did, by the way.

I saw this interview. JRM didn't destroy Andrew Neil. JRM doesn't live in reality and denies it and diverts the debate from it. It's not just Italy that levied a windfall tax on energy companies, France did also, and Neil wasn't suggesting that Britain should model itself on the Italian economy. That's just JRM diverting the issue from the idea of a windfall tax, because there's no justification for not doing it when even the energy CEs are embarrassed and pointing out that they are awash with revenue and 'cash making machines' as Neil pointed out to JRM but which JRM ignored. Andrew Neil is not left wing either. He's not remotely lefty in real life but he knows the arguments to put to conservative politicians for a balanced or challenging interview and if they have valid reasons for their policies they should be able to answer such arguments without resorting to deceit and diversion, unless we want one viewpoint media as in Russia.
