How is it turning the UK into a prison? That's a bit of a myth. 99% of UK expenditure is controlled by the UK government. Recently Mark Rutte, P.M. of the Netherlands said no-one in the EU is now promoting the idea of a superstate or greater union.

'To do or die' That's a line from Tennyson's 'Charge of the Light Brigade' and we know what happened to them. He can't keep going with the existing arrangements, as he suggested without an agreement with the EU and he previously rejected their agreement and they aren't going to change it, they say. There's no time to negotiate a new one anyway even if they were willing to. If Boris just comes out without a deal, everything lapses on day 1. WTO terms would be disastrous.

@andrew30m I don't think it was about culture. The cultures of countries has not become less national, as you say. I know they were concerned about the idea of a European army. Farage kept banging on about that.
