  1. The first time I moved to Liverpool as a student in the 1970s I was shocked to see a boy walking up a main street in the city with rags wrapped around his feet instead of shoes. I'd never seen such a thing in England before. They have done a lot of work to improve the city in recent years. However they had previously put cheap and boxy buildings right in the centre in squares that had fine heritage architecture. There had been no attempt to preserve the look of the place.
