@dragonfly6908 Rebecca Long Bailey is very 'woke' and I can't see her resonating more with traditional Labour voters. The party voted for Keir Starmer that's clear. Every party has its factions. The Tories have always had them in recent times and Boris Johnson is not popular with many of his MPs. The Tories still got elected though. I lived through the Winter of Discontent and it wasn't as bad as things are now.

I don't know what you are referring to but he abstained in a vote recently because he thought there was too little support for people suffering financial hardship because of Covid and that includes small businesses.

@richardlyon67 Covid is a priority for both parties. Some small businesses in local areas are clubbing together and going online via a website. Seems like a good idea. I hate to say it but if people had followed the guidance in the first place we wouldn't be having continual outbreaks. People are sabotaging their own communities and their local businesses when they ignore the guidance on social distancing, wearing masks and hand washing. It's no good people moaning and at the same time contributing to the problem

@richardlyon67 This was not Labour's fault. The Tories always did too little too late and then flip flopped all the time as soon as they were criticised which meant the measures were not sustainably successful, people's sacrifices were in vain and the measures had to be repeated. Labour would not have done things the same way, but since the electorate in its wisdom gave the Tories an 80 seat majority in the house there's very little Labour can do about it. They don't have the numbers to stop or change anything the Tories are doing and now we are where we are, it's a bigger mess to sort out with fewer options. The best models for handling this thing can be seen in Singapore, Taiwan and New Zealand.

@richardlyon67 I've not heard about the ciminalising bit. Criminalising asking questions or criminalising spreading false information? Countries that did best did what they did and are where they are. To be fair they are smaller countries in terms of population, people obeyed the guidance better, Singapore definitely controlled airport arrivals much better, Taiwan had a very impressive response by the administration there and also controlled arrivals. I can't recall all the details but I read an article about it. I believe the article was in Private Eye Magazine. Our government declined to plan ahead for a pandemic when advised to. As a consequence it did not have the right equipment or enough of it to deal with the pandemic. It required hospitals to send untested patients with symptoms back into care homes which had no equipment or provision for dealing with Covid. Our government also shilly shallied and flip flopped over its policies rendering them ineffective in the longer run. It didn't always follow the science and could not explain the logic of its policies to the public and it was a case of 'do as I say, not as I do' when it came to Boris visiting hospitals and shaking hands without gloves and Dominic Cummings doing as he pleased, travelling to and around Durham while infected with Covid.

@richardlyon67 If what you say is true about exposure of those countries to similar viruses being a factor in their lower case incidence, then why does it not hold true for the whole region? Covid 19 is a new strain of Coronavirus and there's not been anything quite like it before in the way it behaves e.g. in what it can do to the body, in how it can spread and be most infectious for a longer period before any symptoms are experienced, and in how it can also be spread by symptomless people.

@richardlyon67 Do you have evidence that Labour does not make a distinction between anti-Vaxxers and people who ask questions about why indemnity was necessary? What Labour seems to be concerned about is 'people churning out disinformation' https://labour.org.uk/press/labour-calls-for-emergency-legislation-to-stamp-out-dangerous-anti-vax-content/
1
@richardlyon67 Labour are concerned about spreaders of misinformation about vaccines, not people asking questions and the tier measures now have to be taken because the Tories made such a hash up of dealing with the virus previously and it's now out of control. Labour is not going to vote against that as we have to get the virus under control but we wouldn't be where we are now if we'd had a Labour government in charge from the beginning.
1
@richardlyon67 Yes but it doesn't look as if this one is going away any time soon and what if it mutates - then previous immunity won't count and neither will current vaccines and the lethality could increase. We also don't know yet, with this one, how long immunity lasts. There's no reason to be complacent.

@richardlyon67 I'm referring to low case numbers, not just deaths. Keeping cases numbers low, unlike neighbouring countries indicates effective anti Covid policies, but you can read what they actually did if you are interested.
1
@richardlyon67 Weren't the protesters breaking the law concerning Covid restrictions by holding a public demonstration at that time? Wasn't that the reason they were arrested?
1
@richardlyon67 You need to be more specific. What demonstration are you referring to?
1
No one 'unleashed a virus'. It spread as viruses do when they are behaving like viruses.

@BB-rn6so I've done loads of research. Unlike you, I don't just look at conspiracy theory sites.
1
@BB-rn6so You realise the President of the USA is a lying toe rag don't you and that Mike Pence is his dimwit acolyte? Kerry Mullis died in 2019 before the Covid 19 pandemic was known about.

Yes, well he has the day job to do.
1
@algo2957 He hasn't been in power yet so he hasn't had the chance to be what you allege.

@dragonfly6908 Let's hope he does get the keys. It's our only hope. His money only comes from the value of the house he owns as house values have shot up in London and the south in recent years and from the money he's earned through making the most of his education and getting a good job as a lawyer. I don't think he has multi-millions though. Do you not admire people who make their own way in the world, who have earned everything they have rather than just being born into wealth and making money from having money? What's wrong with that? He only abstained as a protest because he didn't think the financial support was enough but I expect the Tory media has twisted that and you've been swallowing what they say.
1
@dragonfly6908 However we are living in a more scientific age and scientists and medical experts over the last few years warned the government that a pandemic was the top risk for the country, and made recommendations for the government to prepare for it, all of which the Tory government ignored. The government also continued to ignore expert advice and only took action when it was too late and took ineffective action too, so they do have to take their share of the blame
1
@dragonfly6908 You think they've done their best under the circumstances? Those are circumstances they've created in some cases which they could have avoided. You are too kind. A government can give a crap performance and you will forgive them, even though they were informed by experts and chose to ignore them. I think we get the governments we deserve in that case.
