On the flip side, the military is one of the straightest paths to take in such a country. Where salaries are bad, working conditions equally bad, and what you do manage to obtain subject to the whims of a corrupt official, stability is often lacking. Given the military dominates the political and economic landscape, rising to high enough ranks presents "opportunities" that most others will never achieve. Also, unlike other countries (like Ukraine) where their biggest security concerns are their neighbors, Thailand does not need to worry about getting into a large conventional war. Southeast Asia is generally externally (state-to-state relations) peaceful (barring some exceptions).
