@SilverforceX But Russia also wasted many units in the Kiev region as well. The VDV especially took heavy losses during the early days of the war. And most of Ukraine's best units were already in the East, around the Donbass region. It's why Russia still hasn't taken the rest of the Luhansk or Donetsk oblasts, despite their "liberation" supposedly being the entire point of the conflict. The assault on Kiev wasn't a pinning tactic, but an actual Russian attempt to take Kiev. Remember the 40km convoy? When Kiev proved to be a tougher nut to crack, Russia had to tone down it's expectations for victory.

@FLJBeliever1776 Solid summary. Another thing to mention is that, from the looks of it, a lot of the elite Russian units, such as the VDV, were wasted in idiotic assaults early in the war. The airborne assault of Hostomel and Ivankiv, for example.

@realdacarnival Yeah, Russian organization of occupied Ukrainian areas seems pretty ad hoc and overall bad. Despite the presence of OMON and Internal troops, they don't really have a system in place for organizing the functions of the territory they control. Kherson, for example, appears to be on the verge of starvation. Konotop was basically left to run itself. There was no overarching plan for organizing control, which fits the narrative that Russia wasn't expecting serious opposition, and was banking on having a puppet government in Kiev run things for them.

Kiev is huge. You can't just "blitz" it like some unguarded town. The Russians already tried it at the onset of the war, and it failed horrendously.

@cavalierd8377 The problem is that the Russians actually have less troops fielded than the Ukrainians. Ukraine can afford to guard the route to Kiev with militia while they send their regular units to the Donbass region. Russia can't invest more troops into another attempt to take Kiev unless they pull units out of Donbass or the South.

No one will know, not perhaps until the end of the war. A saturation attack is likely though, as that would wear our the defenses of the ship. Although, maybe two were enough to do it. The Moskva was an old ship, and it lacked modern anti-missile defenses beyond the CIWS.
