Speed isn't always better. If you go that fast, you cannot maneuver, or you will rip the missile apart. Mach 27 is also only achievable currently by ICBMs.

I would equate that to geopolitics. Russia has good relations with Israel, and so does not want to ruin them by shooting down an Israel jet.

There is no known aircraft carrier that can fit the system. However, the Kirov carried S-300 missiles.

@bogdanbogdanoff5164 The Israelis have already stated that. They stated that they don't view Assad as a meaningful threat to them. Syria's airforce is also far behind Israel's airforce in capability and likely number of serviceable aircraft. Iran is Israel's hated rival, and an Iranian presence on Israel's doorstep is sure to get them to respond.

@bogdanbogdanoff5164 One, the RQ-170 was neither armed nor equipped with software that allowed it to autonomously fly back if it lost connection from its homebase. Two, jamming gives away your location. Jamming by nature sends our tons of data to cut off data from yourself. However, under wartime, drones can be equipped with software that either gives them a set path to fly (ie, programmed to strike a strategic target with no input from home), or have them attack the jamming site. With this, jamming is pretty much useless.

@bogdanbogdanoff5164 Quite the contrary. Netanyahu has used nationalist "Israel is surrounded by enemies" slogans quite often. A rocket strike from Syria would actually give him political strength and discredit moderates. It would show that a tough, hard-line leader like him must be in charge. Syrian or Iranian overtures to Israel would likely greatly weaken him, as it would show the other side is looking to make peace. However, it would be political suicide for any of the Arab nations to suggest an official peace with Israel. Egypt did it, and it resulted in Anwar Sadat's assassination.

@SmartassX1 Well, I'm sure of that. I misspoke. It CAN be added to a carrier, but Russia has no carrier which it can be added on. I believe it is too expensive for the Kuznetsov to receive it (especially with talk of retiring the ship). Russian naval ship building is favoring smaller frigates and corvettes, which are too small to fit meaningful numbers of S-400 missiles.

@bogdanbogdanoff5164 Yes there is. It is how Tomahawk missiles are guided. Terrain mapping and inertial guidance. In fact, this is to become even more prominent as technology becomes more accurate. An area can be scanned by satellite before hand, even before the war, and the data can be uplinked to the drone (or missile). The drone flies to the target and scans the terrain ahead of it, using altitude and speed as a reference. It wouldn't need GPS or digital uplink.

@bogdanbogdanoff5164 Fair point. I guess the overall point is to use drones as a distraction. They would have to be cheap, and easy to manufacture. Of course, ECM is a big challenge, which is why drone swarms haven't appeared just yet.
