  1. People would be foolishly naive to think that Americans, or Trump in particular are dumb. Trump is, despite his rhetoric, not at all stupid. He is a shrewd businessman who is the spearhead of a rising populist sentiment.

  3. While China isn't as weak as Iraq, they lack the ability to project hard power. If it came to war, China would be fighting it on their soil, which means their factories and cities would be bombed. However, China has replaced Russia on the top of the list of rivals to the US. Trumps tariffs might be a strategic move to weaken the Chinese economy and wean the US off Chinese goods. It is an eat, or be eaten situation. The US is stronger than the Chinese right now, and Trump sees an opportunity to set them back.
