Not quite. Military technology often spins off into the commercial and medical sector. The internet for example.

The downsides of having a human pilot are less about the limits of the body (dogfighting is becoming increasingly irrelevant due to accurate BVR missiles) and more of a cost factor (needed flight hours, training, and potential political fallout if a pilot is shot down and captured).

@yikemoo Bots, mostly. Arguing is pointless because the amount of time and effort to refute such BS is greater than the time to come-up-with and post BS.

@samueljackson6188 The idea that "more money into 'x' means that things will get better" is a fallacy. For instance, the US already spends more than half of the federal budget on healthcare (much more than the military). Much of it is wasted, however. Mandatory insurance, for example, has driven up costs.

The US has always focused on being at the cutting-edge of military aerospace design.

Not to mention they tried building a plane (more like 3) that could do about everything.

It depends on how much the threat of Russia and China plays into the minds of Congress and the DoD. Many of the garbage projects of late (LCS, for example) were made under the premise that counter-terrorism was the big focus of the US military, not a resurgent Russia or a rising China (which favors conventional, cheap systems).

@bleachorange The J-31 and the J-20 have had tough development cycles, mostly due to China's reliance on old Russian engines (The AL-31).
