  1. Superficial reasoning. Sanctions DO bite. Why do you think Iran and North Korea, and now Russia, so badly want them removed? Sanctioned oil is "tainted" , and thus sells for less. There will always be people willing to deal with it, yes, but they'll demand lower prices (a handling fee, so to say). Also it gets shipped out in smaller quantities. Lower price, lower capacity. And Russia isn't the only nation producing oil or natural gas. It hurts. Badly.

  2. Russia has always been overrated. It still baffles me to still see people blindly think that Russia is still an all-mighty juggernaut, and that any reverses on the battlefield are either fake news, or brilliant 4D chess tactics. Russia is a rusting, decrepit rump state of a dead superstate. A giant Detroit with even crookeder politicians who steal every ruble they can and stuff it in a Swiss bank.
