Gee, I wonder if there was another upstart Asian country that had an outsized influence on American imports whose fast growth upset the idea of American hegemony, only to stagnate after its population aged and a massive asset bubble burst. I think it may have even been called "Japan". Inb4 "Plaza Accord". Japan agreed to the Plaza Accord because it needed to solve the same issue as China: weak consumption and overdependence on US consumption due to an artificially weak currency. Japan reached it's dizzying economic height of power AFTER the Plaza Accord, which supercharged pent up Japanese demand, which got out of control and fueled the unsustainable asset bubble.
