  3. Shooting down an airliner has little value, though it did help Iran realize that the war was increasingly unwinnable, because America was looking for an excuse to attack them.

  5.  @SimunSansa  Well, the United States has a military strong enough to make anyone who shot down one of their plans suffer. Iran, however, does not. And actually, people have shot down, or blown up, American airliners. Qaddafi blew up an airliner and bombed a nightclub in West Germany, Reagan promptly bombed Libya.
